What is Juvederm Voluma XC?
Juvederm Voluma XC Injectable Gel is the newest cosmetic treatment from Allergan; the manufacturer of Botox and Juvederm (one of our favorite fillers for the lower face).  Juvederm Voluma is the first and only filler to be FDA approved for adding volume to the cheek area. This product will instantly give your cheeks (and face) a lift, which will help to turn back the clock and give you a more youthful look and profile. Treatment results can last up to 2 years.

How will Dr. Davis use Juvederm Voluma to improve my appearance?
As we age, there is loss of volume in the cheeks, causing the face to appear flat and sag. Dr. Davis can restore a youthful contour with this robust filler by replacing volume in your cheeks, making you look (and feel) younger.

The cheek is classified into three areas; the apex, apple, and hollow. Juvederm Voluma can be used to add volume to all three areas, lifting up the check (and therefore the face); giving you a “ mini non-surgical face lift.”

Will my Juvederm Voluma treatment be painful?
Like Juvederm, Juvederm Voluma is premade with anesthetic to make treatment more comfortable. Most patients can tolerate injection “straight”. Some patients, however, come 30 minutes before their appointment time to sit with a topical anesthetic cream at no additional charge. Either way, the injections are tolerable and results so exciting that people are thrilled they had the procedure.

Who does Dr. Davis treat with Juvederm Voluma?
Juvederm Voluma is recommended for adults with age-related volume loss in the cheeks or mid face areas. Although this product is recommended for people age 21 and older, most patients who require this filler are over age 40. Both men and women can be helped with this procedure.

Can there be any problems after my Juvederm Voluma treatment?
Occasionally there will be bruising from the injections; but this can largely be prevented by avoiding aspirin and the products listed below. Rarely, you may feel bumps under the skin after your treatment. These can be massaged down with an antibacterial product such as Bacitracin ointment. Side effects could include temporary reactions at the treatment site such as tenderness, mild swelling, firmness, lumps or bumps, bruising, pain, redness, and itching. Fortunately, these are rare.

You should know that Juvederm (and all hyaluronic acid fillers) can be dissolved by the injection of a medication called Hyaluronidase. If for any reason you are unhappy with your results, you are not forced to keep the filler present.

How should I prepare for my Juvederm Voluma treatment with Dr. Davis?
Most side effects can be prevented by avoiding certain items for a week prior to your appointment. These include, aspirin (note – this is sometimes included in certain cold remedies), baby aspirin (unless prescribed by your physician), ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn, and Aleve. Tylenol and acetaminophen products are allowed and safe. You should also avoid vitamin E and multivitamins with vitamin E, fish oils, CoQ10, alcohol (wine, beer, hard liquor), ginkgo, ginger, St. John’s Wort, and certain other herbal products that are known to “thin” the blood and enhance bruising. In addition, avoid foods high in vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, dry roasted almonds, olives, olive oil (plain, in salad dressings and on pizza/pasta), papaya, spinach, arugula, broccoli, blueberries, cinnamon, and horseradish.

We recommend that you purchase Arnica tablets, which can be bought at health food and vitamin stores. Follow the instructions on the package; you can start as early as a few days before your procedure. We suggest that you take them at least the day before and the day of the treatment. You may also want to take them after. Arnica gel is not nearly as effective.

An alternative supplement to minimize bruising after the treatment is Bromelain (pineapple extract). You can take 500mg twice a day for 3 days following a procedure. You should begin taking Bromelain the day of your treatment, after the procedure has been completed. Bromelain can be taken in addition to or instead of Arnica tablets, though Bromelain should not be taken before the treatment, only after.
