Sculptra vialSculptra®

What is Sculptra?
Sculptra Before and After Results in a womanSculptra is an injectable product that acts like a filler by stimulating your own collagen to grow in treated areas. It will gradually and naturally correct folds, hollows and volume loss to restore youthful fullness to the face. Sculptra is made from Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA), a harmless product well tolerated by the skin for years as vicryl (a type of absorbable suture placed below the skin during surgery). This product can be injected to lessen wrinkles and folds around the mouth, to fill in under eye and cheek hollows, and to give definition to the face by augmenting cheekbones and defining the jaw, resulting in a non-surgical face lift. It can also lift indented scars. Unlike fillers, Sculptra works gradually over the course of 2-3 months to provide discreet, natural-looking results that can last up to two years. Because it is a collagen building injectable, Sculptra also leaves the skin tighter, restoring its youthful elasticity. The surface of your skin improves due to new collagen deposition below, resulting in brighter, younger looking skin. No other product will give you the long-lasting, natural fullness that Sculptra will provide.

Sculptra vials needs to be reconstituted one day prior to your treatment. Therefore we require at least one day’s notice when you make your appointment and we will take a deposit for your vial before we custom prepare your product.

Who should be treated with Sculptra?"
Sculptra is the best product for patients who have large areas that need correcting. If you have a thin face from weight loss, heredity, illness, or photo aging, this would be the ideal product for restoring needed volume. Beginning around the age of 30, collagen begins to break down, creating wrinkles and folds that only worsen with age. Sculptra is for men and women interested in adding noticeable fullness to the cheeks, under eye hollows, and folds around the mouth. This product can accomplish considerably more than 1 or 2 syringes of a typical filler can, due to the fact that there is the equivalent of about 6 syringes of filler per vial of Sculptra. It can also safely and effectively be used to tighten and smooth skin on the anterior neck, hands, knees, and body. Because this product is not made from animal proteins like some injectable fillers, no skin tests are required, making Sculptra a great option for virtually anyone.

Sculptra Before Treatment

What does a Sculptra treatment with Dr. Davis entail?
Sculptra treatments are about a 15 minute office procedure. You will be asked to come in 30 minutes before your appointment time to sit with a topical anesthetic cream to make the injections as painless as possible (there is no additional charge for this). The treatment is very well-tolerated and you can immediately return to your normal daily activities. If you prefer, you can remain in your examination room to ice your face, or we can provide you with gel packs to use at home or at work. Two or three monthly treatments are required to see results which should last up to two years. This treatment schedule allows for the gradual restoring of collagen and provides for maximum results before your next treatment. Severe tissue loss may require 3-6 treatments however. You can opt to jump-start your treatment with 2 bottles for your first session if volume loss is severe or quicker results are wanted.

Is a Sculptra treatment safe?
Yes. Sculptra is biodegradable and biocompatible, meaning your body breaks it down naturally without causing harm to you. However, if you are pregnant, Sculptra and fillers should not be used. If you have scleroderma (a type of autoimmune disease), Sculptra is also not advised. If you are allergic to vicryl sutures or have a history of keloid formation or hypertropic scarring, you should not use this product. Sculptra should also not be injected into an area of active skin inflammation or infection.

Can there be any side effects after my Sculptra treatment from Dr. Davis?
The most common side effects from Sculptra include tenderness, redness, bruising, and discomfort at the injection sites. These can rarely last up to 2 weeks. Most of these can be avoided by adhering to the instructions below (“How do I prepare for my Sculptra treatment with Dr. Davis?”) Dr. Davis will explain all possible complications and proper prevention during your initial consultation.

Final Sculptra Results

How do I prepare for my Sculptra treatment with Dr. Davis?
There are certain things we recommend adhering to for about a week prior to your procedure. These tips will help reduce bruising, bleeding, and swelling during and after the treatment.

Avoid the following:

  • All pain relievers except Tylenol: avoid Aleve, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Naprosyn and even low dose baby aspirin (unless recommended by your physician).
  • Vitamin E and all multi vitamins containing Vitamin E. Foods high in Vitamin E should also be avoided such as: sunflower seeds, dry roasted almonds, olives, (including olive oil), papaya, spinach, arugula, broccoli, blueberries.
  • Cinnamon and horseradish
  • Herbal remedies such as St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginger Root, Fish Oil, etc.
  • Alcoholic beverages (optional)

Take the following:

We recommend that you purchase Arnica tablets, which can be bought at health food and vitamin stores. Follow the instructions on the package; you can start as early as a few days before your procedure. We suggest that you take them at least the day before and the day of the treatment. You may also want to take them after. Topical Arnica is not nearly as effective.

An alternative supplement to minimize bruising after the treatment is Bromelain (Pineapple extract). You can take 500mg twice a day for 3 days following a procedure. You should begin taking Bromelain the day of your treatment, after the procedure has been completed. Bromelain can be taken in addition to or instead of Arnica tablets, though Bromelain should not be taken before the treatment, only after.

Is there any special care that needs to be taken after a Sculptra session from Dr. Davis?
You must massage all treated areas for 5 minutes five times a day, for five consecutive days. At treatment we will supply you with Aquaphor healing ointment which is ideal for massaging, but plain Vaseline, Bacitracin, or Polysporin ointment could also be used. Massaging aids in the breakdown of the gel, allowing for a smoother, natural look, as well as preventing any bumps from forming. Should you feel swelling or pain, you can use an ice pack to relieve these symptoms. If there is tenderness, or any serious pain, please call our office to schedule a post-operative visit as soon as possible (at no charge to you).
