What is the Salicylic acid Peel?
This peel utilizes the established peeling agent salicylic acid to treat the face. Salicylic acid is a Beta hydroxy acid; similar to glycolic acid, which is an alpha hydroxy acid. We offer this peel in three strengths. There is a 20% peel, which is the starting strength, and also 25% and 30% peels which are stronger. This peel works best if your skin is oily, and is especially useful for “lifting” blackheads and improving acne. It also helps to decrease skin pigmentation, whether secondary to acne or from other causes. The Salicylic acid peel can safely be used on skin of all colors but is not recommended if you are pregnant. Treatment can remain with the 20% to achieve results, or be increased to the 25% or 30% after the first peel.
How is the Salicylic acid Peel performed by Dr. Davis?
The Salicylic acid peel is a quick in- office procedure. First, your skin is washed with soap and water. Dr. Davis’ assistant will next apply a skin prepping wipe all over your face. This will remove any extra soap residue, makeup, oil, etc. left on your face after washing. Then Dr. Davis will continuously paint the salicylic acid solution all over your face and set a timer for five minutes. If you cannot tolerate the treatment for the full five minutes, then she will neutralize the peel prior (either in a region, or all over). We use small fans to cool your skin during this time to soothe any discomfort or burning you may feel from the peel. Finally, you will wash your face with cool water and apply a topical soothing lotion.
What can you expect from a Salicylic acid Peel by Dr. Davis?
Your skin will be softened and acne and pigmentation will be lessened. For those acne patients who cannot tolerate oral antibiotics or who have become resistant to them this offers a wonderful treatment option. The Salicylic acid peel vastly improves acne (especially comedonal acne) as well as the pigment that can follow acne, and gives a cosmetic improvement in overall skin quality.
Is there any downtime after a Salicylic acid Peel by Dr. Davis?
Your skin will initially be whitened from the acid, as if there is a powder on your face. This lasts approximately 30 minutes and it can be covered with makeup. After this passes, your skin will gradually peel for the next 72 hours, but it will not be noticeable. You may wear makeup and use a water mister. Special after care products are not required, but you should use only bland (non-medicated) washes and moisturizers in the 72 hours post-peel. Do not pull off any flaking or peeling skin, as this may cause scarring. Do not resume acne products or medications, anti aging agents, or any medicated washes until your skin stops peeling.
How many Salicylic acid peels does Dr. Davis recommend?
Typically, a series of four or five peels will be performed every two to four weeks, but scheduling is flexible. We try to at escalate the strength of the peel to maximize skin improvement, but we do not need to increase the strength of the peel for acne to improve. If you are happy and satisfied with your results, then we can halt you peels at that point.
