What is Microdermabrasion and what does it treat?
Microdermabrasion is a rejuvenation procedure that uses fine crystals to abrade the outer layers of skin. It makes the skin smoother, reduces pore size, and treats acne by “unroofing” blackheads and pustules. It improves mild pigmentation problems which can follow acne or arise from other causes, especially in dark-skinned individuals. Microdermabrasion treatments can stimulate collagen formation below the skin and can improve the appearance of acne scars, other indented scars, fine wrinkling, and stretch marks. Treaments can also improve melasma (facial pigmentation from birth control pills, pregnancy, or the sun), and keratosis pilaris (rough bumps on the sides of the arms). This technology has been used in Europe for the past 20 years and Dr. Davis has been using it for over 10 years in her practice.
Who is a candidate for Microdermabrasion?
Any individual from adolescence onward, who has one of the above problems, can be treated. This treatment is safe for individuals of any skin color and can be used even if a woman is pregnant. Microdermabrasion is beneficial to a wide variety of problems as noted above. Mostly, Dr. Davis uses it for treatment of acne and it works especially well if it is primarily comedonal acne (with blackheads). This treatment can be used on the face, back, chest, or other body areas. Like other rejuvenation procedures, it is not covered by insurance.
How does Dr. Davis perform a Microdermabrasion?
Patients will first wash their face with soap and water. Dr. Davis will then pass the microdermabrasion wand across the entire face, chest, or back, treating one region at a time, abrading the skin in at least two different directions. Because microdermabrasion uses crystals to abrade the skin, the procedure is virtually painless. Our machine simultaneously applies crystals in conjunction with suction to re-surface your skin and stimulate new collagen formation beneath the surface. After the procedure, we will remove any of the excess crystals and you will wash your skin with a gentle facial cleanser. Your skin will feel fresh and young and have a pink glow. We recommend putting sunscreen on before going out into the sun, as your fresh skin will be more sensitive to the harmful rays. There is no down time for this procedure.
How often do I need Microdermabrasion treatment?
Microdermabrasion is usually performed every 2-4 weeks (most patients come in monthly) and patients can immediately return to work without any down time. Treatments generally get stronger by increasing the strength of the suction, until a plateau is reached. Most patients complete a series of 5 or 6 monthly sessions to rejuvenate the skin and/or improve acne.
Is Microdermabrasion safe?
Yes. The microdermabrasion procedure is completely non-invasive. It removes only the outer layers of skin, leaving the skin soft, smooth, and with a fresh pink glow. It is safe for all skin colors and for woman who are pregnant. Dermasweep is a stronger form of microdermabrasion, where chemical infusions are used in addition to suction and abrasion. The infusions treat acne, pigmentation, dry skin, and dullness; and are all oil free. See our page on Dermasweep for more information.
