Kybella® (deoxycholic acid): For Treatment of Submental Fat (a “Double Chin”)

What is a Kybella treatment from Dr. Davis?
Kybella® (deoxycholic acid) is an FDA approved injectable medication that is used to eliminate neck fat in adults. Kybella® injections will destroy these fat cells and results are therefore permanent. Once gone, the overlying skin will tighten. Kybella treatments are spaced no less than one month apart.  During an average treatment two to three vials of medication are injected into the neck.  Two to four sessions are needed for most individuals to get satisfactory results.

Who can benefit from a Kybella treatment with Dr. Davis?

Kybella works well for anyone who has excess fat below their chin.  It is especially popular among men since it helps neckties and dress shirts fit better. However, anyone seeking a more defined profile will benefit from a Kybella treatment. It will also make you appear slimmer, without losing weight.

How does Dr. Davis perform a Kybella procedure?
The skin is first cleaned with an antiseptic and an ice pack is applied. Next, a small, sterile, disposable grid is applied to the area beneath your chin to delineate the injection sites. Kybella is then injected using a fine needle. The number of injections will vary based on the surface area to be treated.  Patients may feel a slight pinch and a warming sensation when the Kybella is delivered into the skin.  Most patients will require 2 vials per treatment.  Those with a larger, more significant amount of submental fat will require more. We do not recommend topical anesthetic for this procedure.

How many Kybella treatments will Dr. Davis have to perform on me?
A series of 2-3 treatments, 4 to 6 weeks apart, is generally sufficient. However, patients with extensive submental fat may require up to 6 treatments.

Is a Kybella treatment from Dr.Davis Safe?
Yes. Deoxycholic acid is naturally present in our bodies and therefore there is no risk of allergy. This product is what helps us digest fat and is naturally found in the bile.  There is a sterile, disposable stencil that is used to mark the treatment area for controlled injection.

What are the potential side effects of a Kybella treatment from Dr. Davis?
The most common side effect is swelling.  This is how the body’s natural inflammatory process destroys fat cells.  The skin may even “jiggle” for a few days. You may also have bruising, pain, redness and numbness in the treated area. These usually resolve within a few days, but can last up to a few weeks. After, the treatment the area becomes numb.  Feeling in the area gradually returns before it’s time for your next treatment.   Some of the more serious, though rare, side effects can include trouble swallowing and nerve injury. We use a designed template and work below the mandibular nerve to avoid this problem.

How long will a Kybella session with Dr. Davis take?
The entire procedure runs about 20 minutes. If there is a larger amount of neck fat to treat the procedure can take longer.

Will a Kybella treatment from Dr. Davis hurt and what will I look like after my treatment?
Patients will feel a slight pinch and a burning sensation when Kybella is delivered into the skin.  We do not recommend anesthetic for this procedure and it is not needed.  There will also be warmth in the area that will go away in a few minutes, which is normal. An ice pack will be applied after your treatment to soothe the skin. There will be excess fluid in the treatment zone for 24 to 48 hours and your neck may “wiggle.”

How long does it take to see results after a Kybella treatment with Dr. Davis?
The number of treatments required will depend on the severity of the neck fat treated.  Results will start to appear a few weeks after your initial treatment.  With each treatment, more fat is destroyed and the results will become more dramatic.

How should I prepare for my Kybella treatment with Dr. Davis?
At least a week before your treatment, Dr. Davis wants you to discontinue oral blood thinning medications, unless prescribed by your physician. Avoid all pain relievers (Aspirin, ibuprofen, and even low dose baby Aspirin) except Tylenol (acetaminophen) which is safe. At this time stop vitamin E, all multi-vitamins containing Vitamin E, cinnamon, horseradish, and herbal remedies such as fish oil, ginger root, gingko, etc. to prevent prolonged bruising. We recommend that you purchase Arnica tablets, which can be bought at our office or a health food store. Follow the instructions on the package; you can start as early as a few days before your procedure. We suggest that you take them at least the day before and the day of the treatment. You may also want to take them after. Arnica gel is not nearly as effective.

Is there any special care that needs to be taken after a Kybella treatment with Dr. Davis?
We recommend that you do not work out the day of your procedure.  That evening you should avoid Chinese food, sushi, or other salty foods since it can cause more water retention. You should avoid having any elective plastic surgery in the neck for at least six months. Avoid waxing, laser hair removal and threading in this area.

Who should not have treatment with a Kybella treatment with Dr. Davis?
We recommend avoiding this treatment if you (are):

  • Pregnant or nursing
  • Have open wounds, cuts, or abrasions on the skin being treated
  • Have any current skin infections or herpes simplex in the treatment area
  • Have blood clotting problems or are on blood thinning medication
